Roulette Table Odds and House Edge
There are a number of different variations of the game of roulette and the odds and payout schedules will vary depending on which variation of the game you are playing.
Here we will look at the two most common variations of roulette – European roulette and American roulette. European roulette has 37 numbered slots – the numbers 1 through 36 plus a single zero. The overall house edge in a game of European roulette is 2.7%. In a game of American roulette, there are 38 numbered slots – the numbers 1 through 36 plus a single zero and a double zero. This results in the house edge in American roulette being 5.26%. These odds can also be affected by specific bets that you choose or specific rules that you apply. If you play the five number bet in American roulette, the house edge will jump to 7.89%. On the other hand, if you play the en prison or the la partage rule in European roulette, the house edge will drop to 1.35%.
Bet Payouts in Roulette
There are a total of ten bets that can be placed in a game of European roulette and each bet will have different odds and a different payout schedule. The odds of the bet will always be slightly more than the payout and this difference is what is known as the house edge. It is worthwhile to understand the odds of each bet and the payout schedule and house edge in order to be able to decide which bet is most worthwhile for you to place.
